Straightened Arrows Club News

Letter from the Club President

12/27/09 - Hello, Straightened Arrows archery Club Members and Friends, there are a lot of things going on for everyone at the fish and game these days. I am going to briefly touch on the highlights to bring you all up-to-date.

Rifle/pistol back-stop expansion - The board of directors has asked the defiance county airport to donate dirt and build up the rifle/pistol back-stop; they have agreed and have begun the project. I know we all might not use the rifle range but the added security of bullet stopping power is comforting when in the woods.

New shooting benches - The fish and game and the pistol club have made new shooting benches for the rifle/pistol range. These benches are placed at 25/50 and 100 yards. The parking also is going to be changed in the near future out to the 100 yard mark where shooters will access the range and move west to shoot closer.

Ravine filling north of pistol club - You might have noticed in the past few weeks some things have changed as you come into the club grounds. The board of directors has secured a lot (and I mean a lot) of dirt, in the ball-park of 60,000 tons of dirt. This dirt is being donated from a large local excavating project. The dirt is going to be filling in the ravine that is just north of the pistol club. This is needed to help with the building settling into the ravine and breaking blocks on the north wall. The good thing is we are going to be getting a permanent archery range and back-stop mound in the next few months from this as improvement. All this work is being donated by the excavation company and Steve Snyder, as well as the stone and tile that are needed.

Archery range drive improvement - We are working on getting the dirt to also fill in the drive through the ravine going into the range archery 3-D range. We are not 100% sure at this time if there will be enough dirt, but we are hopeful. Raising the grade up would take a lot of work out of pulling trailers in and out of the range with 3D targets.

Indoor archery range - Last month we reached a tentative agreement with the board of directors to make some modifications to the south wall in the main club-house. We are planning on removing this wall and making a 20 yard indoor range inside the building. The back-stop would be on the far south wall in the smaller south room. Some modifications to the small room south wall and lighting upgrades would be all that is needed to make an indoor range a reality. Word has started to get out on the indoor range, and it looks like there will be a lot of interest in shooting an indoor winter league. Not to mention kids from archery in the schools and archery clinics to teach archery basics to new shooters. This improvement will also make the club more inviting for rentals with the larger hall size of all one room.
